A. Yes, you can. You can finish your classes after graduation. Your tuition must be paid to participate.
Valedictorian and Salutatorian
The student in the graduating class with the highest GPA is named the Valedictorian. The Salutatorian is the student in the graduating class with the second highest GPA. The transcript will note the honors.
Ladies, wear dresses or blouses with a white collar or one color that’s not too busy with a collar and skirt that are not longer than your gown, and nude stockings and low heels. Do Not wear heels 3, or 4 inches high. You will walk up and down stairs and high heels may make you trip and fall.
Men, wear dark or black slacks, dress shoes and a tie.
High School Graduation Day checklist -
What to Wear :
1. How To Dress for Graduation (under the gown):
Men generally wear dark trousers and a dress shirt and tie under their gowns. Women usually wear a lightweight dress or a blouse and a skirt that is shorter than the gown so it does not hang below the robe.
2. How To Wear a Graduation Cap:
The high school graduation cap is worn flat on the head, one point of the square facing forward (like a diamond).
3. High school graduation tassel:
Tassels are worn on the right side at the start of the graduation ceremony, after everyone has walked on stage and returned to their seat. Everyone will be asked to stand and turn their tassel to the left. You will take your left hand and pull your tassel from the right to the left. The speaker will say, “Tassel Ceremony”
4. Graduation Gown How To:
High school graduation gowns should fall midway between the knee and ankle. They are worn over your regular clothing, zipped up in the front.
5. Honor Cords How To:
The middle knot is put behind your neck. Bring the honor cords to the front, hanging down your sides with two tassels on each side. The honor cord colors are yellow/gold.
***If you have a 3.5 grade point average or above you may purchase a honor cord to be worn during the graduation ceremony.***
If you qualify to graduate with honors you will be notified. Graduation honor cords are $15.00 each.
Valedictorian and Salutatorian Medallions are $20 each.
More information on the Highest Ranking Graduate
The Highest Ranking Graduate program provides a tuition waiver for the student graduating at the top of their high school class for their freshman year of college.
The student is:
- a Texas resident, nonresident, or foreign student;
- graduate from an accredited high school in the State of Texas* and
- the highest ranking graduate in their high school.
* Public and charter high schools accredited by TEA and private schools accredited by the Texas Private School Accreditation Commission (TEPSAC).
Institutions of Higher Education Availability
The tuition waiver is available only at a Texas public college or university.
To access listings of Texas public colleges and universities, follow the links to Texas Public Institutions.
The award is free tuition during both semesters of the first regular session immediately following the student's high school graduation. Fees are not covered. No funds may be used to pay tuition for continuing education classes for which the college receives no state tax support. An exemption may be granted by petitioning the institution's president due to special circumstances.
The document is issued by the high school. The student must provide a copy of the document received indicating they are the highest ranking high school graduate to the registrar of the college they plan to attend.
High School administration should email the Texas Education Agency at HRG@tea.texas.gov to obtain the highest ranking graduate forms. Forms are made available at the end of April.
Continued Receipt of the Tuition Waiver
Each institution of higher education may have requirements such as maintaining a minimum grade point average in order to continue receiving the tuition waiver. Check with the particular college for their requirements. Texas Education Code §54.2001
