Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA): What Texas Families Need to Know

For many Texas families, the traditional school system isn’t working the way it once did. Overcrowded classrooms, limited individualized support, rigid schedules, and rising stress levels have left parents searching for better options for their children.

That’s where Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA) come in.

TEFA is a new state program designed to give families more control, flexibility, and choice in their child’s education — including the ability to use approved education funds with qualified online schools like Texas Success Academy.

What Is Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA)?

Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA) is a state-run education savings program launching for the 2026–2027 school year. The program allows eligible Texas families to receive state education funds in a dedicated account that can be used for approved educational expenses.

Instead of education funding being tied to a single school system, TEFA empowers parents to decide how and where their child learns — whether that’s through tutoring, alternative learning environments, or approved online schools.

TEFA was created by the Texas Legislature to address growing concerns that a one-size-fits-all education model doesn’t meet the needs of every student.

Why TEFA Matters: The Problems Families Are Facing

Across Texas, families are voicing similar concerns:

  • Children falling behind despite trying their best

  • Increased anxiety, burnout, and disengagement from school

  • Limited access to personalized academic support

  • Rigid schedules that don’t accommodate different learning styles

  • Parents feeling unheard when advocating for their child

TEFA was designed as a response to these challenges — offering families choice, flexibility, and control over their child’s education without forcing them to pay entirely out of pocket.

Who Can Apply?

Eligibility for Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA) is designed to ensure that students who could benefit most from flexible learning options have access to the program. To qualify, a student must:

  • Live in Texas, ensuring that the program serves Texas families,

  • Be a U.S. citizen or a lawful resident,

  • Be eligible to attend a Texas public school or pre-K program, which includes students currently enrolled in public school, pre-K, or certain qualifying programs.

Once a student is accepted into the program, they can continue participating year after year, as long as they maintain eligibility under the program guidelines. This ongoing participation allows families to plan ahead, providing consistent support for their child’s educational journey and enabling learning to be tailored to each student’s individual strengths, interests, and needs.

When and Where Do Families Apply for TEFA?

Families will apply directly through the state’s official TEFA application portal, which will be managed by Texas education authorities. Accepted families will be notified in spring 2026, with funds becoming available in stages beginning July 1, 2026.

The TEFA program follows a structured timeline to ensure smooth participation. Families can submit applications starting February 4, 2026, with the window closing on March 17, 2026. Accepted applicants are notified in April 2026, and funds are distributed beginning July 1, 2026 for the 2026–27 school year.

Students who remain eligible and continue to follow program requirements can participate year after year, providing families with consistent support and flexibility in planning long-term educational strategies.

Important: Not All Schools Are TEFA Approved

One of the most common misconceptions is that all schools automatically accept TEFA funds — this is not true.

Only schools and programs that meet the state’s requirements and complete the approval process can accept TEFA funding. Families should always verify a provider’s approval status before making enrollment decisions.

Texas Success Academy is proud to be qualified as a TEFA-approved online education provider, allowing families to confidently explore online learning options without uncertainty about eligibility.
